David OReilly, Holly Herndon & Mathew Dryhurst, Fatima Al Qadiri & Transforma, William Basinski, Evelina Domnitch & Dmitry Gelfand // The New Infinity, Ed. 1

As part of the IMMERSION series by the Berliner Festspiele in co-production with the Hamburg Planetarium, The New Infinity presented new artworks for planetariums by David OReilly, Holly Herndon & Mathew Dryhurst, Fatima Al Qadiri & Transforma, William Basinski, and Evelina Domnitch & Dmitry Gelfand. The artists used the MNTN Production Suite for the pre-mixing in their studios and for the 3D sound mixing on location. All works have been presented on the MNTN Spatial Sound System in the Mobile Dome in Berlin.

Planetariums have been mainly scientific and educational spaces, and contemporary art was rarely on display. Yet planetariums can exhibit impressive audio-visual works, especially when the high-resolution dome projections join carefully crafted soundtracks presented on a 360-degree sound system. This project aimed not only to democratize the high technology of planetariums but, as an alternative to the usual program, to invite contemporary artists to develop specific works of art for this “new” medium, which is becoming increasingly accessible in the digital age.

Following the premiere in Berlin, the program was presented at the Hamburg Planetarium, and in various planetariums in the US as part of the Germany Year 2018/19.
